ECB to have more room for rate hike as crisis ebbs: ZEW economist

MANNHEIM: Growing optimism that the euro zone crisis is over the worst will give the European Central Bank more room for an earlier rise in interest rates, an economist at Germany's ZEW economic research institute said on Tuesday.

"The ECB would now have more room for an earlier increase of interest rates," ZEW economist Michael Schroeder told Reuters after the institute's survey of German analyst and investor sentiment climbed more than expected in August.

ZEW's monthly poll of economic sentiment rose to 42.0 from 36.3 in July, reaching its highest level since March. Schroeder said 25 per cent of participants expected higher inflation in the euro zone in the next six months and almost none saw it falling.

"There is a tendency for the euro zone as a whole to come out of recession in the second quarter," said his colleague Marcus Kappler.
