ECB can do more to bolster the euro: Christine Lagarde

WASHINGTON: International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde is calling on the European Central Bank to take futher steps to stabilize the economy of the eurozone.

Lagarde told reporters in Washington that the world economy is suffering a decline in confidence fueled by doubts about the ability of European and U.S. leaders to manage economic problems.

She said that European leaders should maintain a "crisis management mode'' as they seek to address the debt crisis. Lagarde's comments come a day before the ECB meets to decide on interest rates.

Lagarde noted recent comments by ECB President Mario Draghi vowing to do "whatever it takes'' to save the euro.

Lagarde said: "More can be done.'' She said that low inflation allows for more aggressive steps to strengthen the euro.
