Van Rompuy welcomes the way Romania ensures financial stability

European Council President Herman Van Rompuy on Thursday welcomed the way Romania carried out with the assistance program agreed with the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

Romania managed to ensure the stability of its financial system amid a world economic crisis, stressed the visiting EC president in a press statement he made at the Cotroceni Presidential Palace with Romanian President Traian Basescu.

The EC official also said that he was "impressed" with the results Romania got in fulfilling the technical conditions for the Schengen entry, after Basescu informed him of the extraordinary activities carried out in this respect.

"I am aware of the fact that the aim of the Schengen entry is of essential importance to the Romanian citizens," Van Rompuy said, adding that this is also a priority for the EU's Hungarian presidency and the Council will soon discuss the issue again.

The financing of the European Stability Mechanism was also discussed and Basescu asked Van Rompuy to break down the computation of the contribution of each member states that will not put Romania in difficulty.

According to the Romanian president, the distribution of the contributions as accepted by most of the member states would put Romania at a disadvantage.

Van Rompuy also met with Romanian Prime Minister Emil Boc and the latter told him that Romania is expecting the EU's Hungarian presidency to set a calendar for the country's Schengen accession, insisting that his country should be evaluated correctly and not be imposed conditions that have nothing to do with Schengen accession.

Van Rompuy is in Bucharest on Thursday for a half-day short visit, the last leg of his three-country Eastern European tour, after stops in Prague and Sofia on Wednesday.

His visits are mainly aimed at preparing the economic decisions that will be agreed upon at the Spring European Council scheduled for March 24-25, as well as at ensuring the implementation of the decisions of the European Council meeting held this February, especially those on energy, according to a release of Romania's Presidential Administration.
